Permafrost Pixels is the visual work of Derek Martin, born and raised in Nome on the coast of the Bering Sea.
Through photography and film, I document the landscapes, people, culture, wildlife, events, and everyday moments that make life in Western Alaska unlike anywhere else.
My connection to photography began long before Permafrost Pixels. From experimenting with cameras and video as a kid to documenting the world around me today, I've always been drawn to the idea that a photograph can preserve a moment, a place, and a story long after it has passed.
Permafrost Pixels is where I bring that work together—a growing visual record of Nome, the Bering Sea, and Alaska's western Arctic, seen through the eyes of someone who calls this place home.

I’m Derek, born and raised in Nome, Alaska.
My photography is shaped by a lifetime spent here—by the light, weather, landscape, people, and rhythms of life along the Bering Sea.
I’m drawn to moments that feel unmistakably like this place: winter light across the tundra, sea ice along the coast, a snowmachine cutting through blowing snow, wildlife on the landscape, people gathering, and the quiet moments in between.
Permafrost Pixels is my way of preserving those moments through photography and film.
This is home. This is how I see it.
